Basement leaks are a sign of failing mortar. Mortar generally does not fail in one spot only. Stone foundation construction in New England began in the 1600's until early 1900's. Somerville homes with stone foundations have a minimum of one hundred year old lime mortar. Lime from this period is free of Portland cement and over time ground water washes out of the bonding agents in the lime leaving it dry and sandy. The first thing to go is the white washing coatings then the masonry joints crumble causing leaks and structural concerns. 

 By restoring the masonry grout or joints between stones and bricks you restore the stability of your homes structure and allow for waterproof sealants to be effective.
