lime morar restoration

Natural hydrated lime

The use of hydrated lime and later finely processed hydraulic lime is present in early Massachusetts home and foundation construction.  Early homes in Salem, Beverly and Danvers used different forms of lime for plastering, brick work, foundation mortar and waterproofing.    Early settlers in the 1600 and 1700's were subject to lime imports that were brought from Europe. Examples of early lime consisted of  calcium lime, magnesium lime or quick lime. Once manufacturing started in the late 1600's and kilned lime became present in construction. Washed sand and local clay played a factor in mix ratios that later affect the deterioration rates in historic homes. First period homes made use of lime with calcium additives that rival the strength of later used mortar with Portland cement. Portland cement was not introduced into Massachusetts foundation construction till mid 1800's. Homes built in the 1800's and 1900's still used a lime mortar mix with the new commonly used waterproofing benefit of Portland cement.

When working with historic homes we have decades of experience in first period construction and the many different uses of native and early imported masonry lime mortar products.  Our company can professionally restore and preserve your historic foundation for years to come.

Having years of experience working on first period homes and early construction from the 1700's , 1800's and 1900's we have learned how to work with all aspects of aged mortar. The different types of bricks, local fieldstone and ledge stone all play a key role in a foundation restoration project. Today, along with the benefit of experience, we make use of the advancement in masonry products. Materials are available now that make restoring and rebuilding historic foundations easier. Through practical experience we know what products work best and what to avoid. Although several products promise the world there is really no substitute for honest masonry. Most sealant products thrive on being able to seal in masonry or stop water. Our company has the advantage of working with mortar, lime, bricks and stone to recreate and preserve the foundation without relying on sealants. Basement sealing and white washing can only be affective and lasting with full masonry repairs.

At Thompson Crowley Masonry we make all structural repairs first.  Mortar repairs and full repointing with lime based mortars are necessary depending on the age, chemical make up and masonry building materials.  Knowing what materials and masonry products to use on your foundation is a skillset gained over decades of experience working directly with historic homes. We know the best way to restore your foundation and waterproof your basement.

Beyond material knowledge we are professionally trained brick and stone masons with a portfolio of volumes of stone and brick work.
