Foundation repairs and restoration

At Thompson Crowley Masonry Inc. we work on all aspects of masonry foundations. Concrete poured foundations, block foundations, brick foundations and stone foundations.

Stone foundations are built with fieldstone, blasted ledge and quarried dimensional stone. The Boston area is famous for its quarried granite with decorative block veneers on estate homes and period constructions. Stone foundations have been in use in Massachusetts construction since the first period homes were constructed through out Salem, Peabody, Danvers, Boston and now Somerville and Medford areas to name a few. 

Stone foundations had dry stacked stones in early lean to homes that spanned the foundations framing. More elaborate homes and buildings in Salem, Swampscott, Marblehead and Somerville areas had basements for storage and frostline footings. These stone foundations were all constructed with sand and lime for building and waterproofing basements. Lime coatings were used to create a barrier against outside elements including moisture, insects and rodents. The plastering and rendering of walls is still used today in modern construction.

Concrete foundations can crack and will need interior waterproof coatings to prevent water and moisture infiltration.  Brick foundations over time will require mortar joint repointing and brick repairs. Block foundations at times will need to be coated to add a greater barrier for waterproofing and air quality. Stone foundations being the oldest form of foundation construction require stone setting mortar repairs and lime mortar coatings.
