 At Thompson Crowley Masonry our family has been working in Swampscott masonry since the 1960's. We purchased quarry stone and masonry materials in Swampscott throughout the 60's, 70's and eighties. 

 Working with Swampscott dense blue granite for decades gave us our roots in split and seam face stone works. Having years of experience with stone masonry and brick work our company was called upon to fix and repair stone foundations for local contractors. 

 From years of repairs our network of foundation customers grew and we became known as stone foundation contractors.

Stone foundations are essentially stone retaining walls with four foot stone bases and three ft. of freestanding stone walls above grade. Stone foundations can not be built like your average retaining wall there is different building factors to consider. Bearing points, back pressure, load spans and ultimately they have to be waterproof.

 Full stone foundations are not built today. Modern builders use poured concrete and thin veneers to achieve stone masonry or brick accents to finer properties.

All homes, estates and buildings built prior to early 1900's used stone and brick masonry. These foundations were also constructed with unique product of the time period lime mortar.

 Lime mortar is a mixture of hydrated lime and sand or Natural Hydrated Lime NHL / lime putty. 

 Over time the lime mortar needs repairs mostly below grade where water saturated the basement walls. Lime white washing would once preserve basements if the mortar was intact. Today early stone foundations of the period will require stone foundation repairs and a full restoration to achieve structural stability and basement waterproofing.

 Repairing and restoring foundations constructed with lime mortar requires knowledge of stone masonry, foundation construction and the use of lime mortars and sealants.
