Contractors relied on natural resources of ledge, manufactured clay bricks and lime mortar. Portland Cement was not commonly used till 1800's in England and 1900'S in America. Cambridge foundation builders and masons used practiced building techniques of stone foundation bases below grade and brick above grade if budget allowed for it. Fine granite dimensional stone was added above ground exteriors on estate homes or brick. Foundation builders used a hydrated lime, quick lime or hydraulic lime and sand for construction in foundations and plaster.
Different aggregates were used in lime for strength. Horse hair plaster for interior homes walls and ceilings. A wide array of minerals and specimens were used for foundation construction to add strength to mortar and help in waterproofing.
